Alfie and Mia Kick Off the Natspec Conference

In their speeches Alfie and Mia told their stories and took everyone on a journey from when they first started at Aurora Boveridge College to where they are now, and how they have a focus on a career pathway. 

Alfie said: “It was a good opportunity to tell my story about why mainstream schools/colleges are not suitable for everyone and it was huge step out of my own comfort zone.”

Coping with changes and new situations

It was a big event for both students and they had to cope with new situations and changes.

They were meant to have a familiarisation day ahead of the event but the hotel in Stratford on Avon had a fire, so the whole conference was moved to Manchester and there was no time for a visit to the venue ahead of the event. They coped with the unexpected change and lack of opportunity to familiarise themselves with the venue very well.

Alfie had also never used a train before so it was a whole new experience. “I sat on a train for over 4 hours and survived!” he said.

Explaining why the need for special education provision is paramount

Their speeches were important as they underlined why special educational provision is so important.

Alfie told the conference: “The courses offered to me at Aurora Boveridge have helped me to develop my interest. I am currently studying Maths and an Animal Care Level 2 course and bushcraft where I can explore habitats/nests and birdwatch. I have also passed English GCSE with a Level 6. “

Mia said “Whilst at Boveridge I discovered my chosen career pathway is in childcare. My work experience at Tops Nursery and Rock-a-Tots have been incredibly insightful. I have gained valid experience working within a childcare setting and have a clear understanding of the role and daily requirements. I have already gained experience in the industry and have set my sights on a clear career goal.”
