Updates from Aurora Boveridge College

At Aurora Boveridge College, our students are always learning, exploring and taking on new challenges. Here’s a look at some of our latest news and activities:
Environmental Science field trip
Last term, our second-year Environmental Science students went on a field trip to Leeson House Field Studies Centre in Swanage. The trip aimed to deepen their understanding of the carbon cycle, focusing on:
- Understanding where carbon is stored and how it is transferred between different sinks.
- Appreciate how humans are disrupting the carbon cycle.
- Consider the ways we can mitigate the harmful imbalances in carbon.
The day began with a classroom-based session, followed by hands-on activities in the afternoon. The students used clinometers, tape measures and trigonometry to work out tree heights and used the data to determine the carbon stored in the trees. They also learnt how to estimate the age of tree species using circumference measurements.
Hospitality students host brownie and hot chocolate event
Last term, our Level 2 Hospitality students used their event-planning skills by creating a brownie and hot chocolate bar. This event served as a mini project to prepare for their summer term project, where they will plan and run a full-scale hospitality event.
Students demonstrated exceptional teamwork, creativity and organisational skills as they:
- Designed marketing materials and order forms.
- Tested and perfected brownie recipes, including a vegan and gluten-free option.
- Organised equipment and managed the logistics of the event.
Together the students served a total of 52 brownies (chocolate orange, Oreo and Crunchie flavours) and 25 hot chocolates. Well done to Alfie, Liam, Lily-Ann and Oscar on a very successful 'mini event' where they showed great teamwork, organisation and communication skills.
Ten Tors Challenge 2025
For the first time, Aurora Boveridge College students will be taking part in the prestigious Ten Tors Challenge, organised by the British Army. Taking place on Dartmoor National Park from 9th-11th May 2025, our team will tackle the 15-mile route, navigating ten of Dartmoor’s tors (granite towers) and completing the challenge in a single day. The challenge begins at 7.30am, with a cut off time of 6pm. Students will need to complete the task without support and carrying water, food and emergency supplies.
This adventure will test their:
- Teamwork and communication
- Physical fitness, resilience and determination
- Navigation and problem-solving skills
To prepare, students will undergo training, including two 15-mile practice walks, to ensure they are ready to face Dartmoor's rugged terrain and unpredictable weather conditions.
