Hogging the limelight again

Aurora Boveridge College are thrilled to be awarded Silver Hedgehog Friendly Campus status which recognises the additional work they’ve done since their Bronze award in 2023 to make the college grounds even more hedgehog friendly.

The scheme is run by The Hedgehog Preservation Society to help educational establishments make impactful changes for hedgehogs.

Teacher (and Hedgehog Champion) Emily Sheppard at Aurora Boveridge College said: “Hedgehogs are a vulnerable species in the UK due to habitat loss, roads and garden hazards.  The Hedgehog Friendly Campus Awards are designed to protect hedgehogs, enhance hedgehog habitats and to educate our learners.

"We’re proud that hedgehogs are welcome here and we’re thrilled with our award."

To achieve this award the college have been working hard for their endangered animals - they had to make feeding stations, a wild garden and a no-mow area.  They also completed a pond audit to ensure that their ponds were safe for hedgehogs and that the animals had a safe escape route in case they fell in. A footprint survey was also completed to see where the hedgehogs were in the grounds.

The college are now working towards a gold award, continuing their mission to help hedgehogs increase their numbers.
